My Hobby

One of my favourite things to do is skiing. Personally, I find skiing to be not only extremely fun but also an excuse to go up onto the mountains and take in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. I find that when I am skiing on a mountain, the exhilaration of going down the mountain at 50 km per hour is only half the experience. The sound of the wind whistling by my ears, the iciness of the snow gradually increasing as the sun sets, and just the beauty of nature on top of the mountain are all, in my opinion, a crucial part of the experience.
I remember the first time I went skiing, it was through a program that my elementary school offered. We went as groups of six with an instructor to learned the basics of skiing. Oh man, was it challenging.. Having never learned how to skate, (which supposedly makes it easier to learn how to ski) I was completely new to it. I think most of us in our group had fallen at least a couple of times before we even made it to the bunny hill (the easiest slope on the mountain). After almost an hour of just learning how to move on flat ground in skis, we finally went down the bunny hill, and I'm pretty sure every single one of us wiped out. Strangely enough, that just made us even more excited to learn how to ski properly. The program included four days worth of lessons, spread out over a month, and by the end of that month, we had slowly but surely moved from the bunny hill to harder, actual ski slopes. Although it was quite physically demanding, I still think that learning how to ski properly was one of my favourite experiences in my life.
