Coronavirus
The coronavirus pandemic has put us in an unprecedented time. In this time of crisis, I think that the most important thing is to save lives, not money. There are a lot of people out there who believe that given the current situation, reopening the economy and trading a few lives is better than keeping the economy closed, and have it be damaged. I think that this kind of thinking is not only wrong, but it should also be frowned upon. This belief does not consider the immunocompromised part of the population, as even if a person is completely healthy and the virus passes through them with no adverse effects, the virus is still being transmitted by the person. Our healthcare professionals are already under tremendous stress, and the more people who carelessly go out and get the virus, the less capacity is left for those who really need treatment. Personally, I think that if the economy were to reopen soon, it should be done at a reasonable pace, taking into consideration which businesses are actually needed.
Another topic which I found really interesting given the current situation is the amount of misinformation, is out there. Media outlets constantly pounce on anything they can use as clickbait, even if the information has not yet been confirmed. I think that the media has played a large part in how this pandemic has played out, and it sometimes puts the wrong picture in people's heads. There has been a lot of blame put out into the world. Citizens blaming their governments, governments blaming other governments, and even governments blaming their own doctors. I think that this is wrong. In a time of crisis such as this, blaming each other for their actions or inactions does not accomplish anything. I don't deny that many people could be at fault in how this pandemic was handled, but I think that blaming each other accomplishes nothing. I think the real issue in this pandemic is those who are in charge of handling the problem doing it poorly. Rather than face the issue head-on, they go in circles dishing out blame and making the problem worse.
